The 2000 SPC Rally

Gingerman Road Course - Tech Day
& The Rental Car

"Ok, who welded the diff on the rental car?"

Jeff P flew into Chicago from Connecticut with his buddy Carl and rented a SL2 for the week.  Carl owns & drives a Ford Escort, but after the Rally we had a feeling that might change.

In the sake of tradition, Wally performed the required rental car traction tests (it was our tech day at the track, after all).  It seems that a burnout with a door open causes a lot of dinging and flashing from the instrument cluster in these newer cars

Jeff had decals made up for the car to promote their new organization, "Not My Car Racing".

This wasn't the first time we've had rented vehicles on the track, and it certainly won't be the last.

(For more rental car action, see my '99 Rally section and the writeup on the club's 4/8/2000 Gingerman lapping day.)

After the car's prep was complete, Carl was ready.

The decals remained on the car for the entire week.  It certainly received its share of looks in Chicago traffic (and at the hotel, at the movie, at the car show...).

SPC standard rental car disclaimer

We realize that there are some people reading this who would think that driving a stock rental car in this manner is dangerous and irresponsible.  In the hands of a driver with some experience and the proper safety equipment, risk to the vehicle & driver is minimal, and mechanical wear from a day out on the track does not cause any permanent damage to the vehicle.  After all, most of us use our own own daily-drivers on the track and don't drive them any differently.
