The '99 SPC Rally

New Engines & A Rental Car

Earlier in the week, both Stan and Wally ended up with wrecked engines on Gingerman's road course.  Jamin picked up Stan from the retailer in Michigan after our day on the track and he was quickly able to rejoin us.   Wally wasn't as fortunate and ended up missing a bit more of the Rally.  While at the Michigan Saturn retailer several days after the incident, Wally suddenly did come out of his temporary depression when he heard the magic words, "Rental Car...".

Having felt cheated out of some prime Saturn Performance Club action, Wally loaded up the loaner black SL2 and headed back out to Chicago with a vengeance to meet up with the group just in time to catch the car show & party/awards ceremony at the Deebs compound.

These pics really don't do the day justice.   The video is another matter altogether...

Burnout (27k)
Wally seems to be having some traction problems.

More burnout (11k)

These stock Firestone Affinity tires sure wear quickly.  Lots of road noise too.

Where did these odd tire tracks come from?

Rubber (25k)

More rubber (13k)

The car must have run over some chunks of rubber or something.

>>>Fast forward>>>  Wally probably would have autocrossed the rental car on the final day of the Rally also, but unfortunately the extremely high temperatures on that day made many of us just sleep in instead.  Wally did give Stan a ride back to the Saturn retailer in Michigan after the Rally was over, where his car was also receiving a new engine.  All Stan could say for the remainder of the Rally was, "I miss my car", and "spare parts for a 2.1 liter!!"

We feel for ya, guys - it could have happened to any of us.   Next year's Rally will be here in no time, and it'll be better than ever.

<<<Rewind<<<   Ok, back to the present...
