One Lap of America - 5/4/2002

Dragstrip (36k)
The front straight of IRP was also the dragstrip.

When the road course events were finished, cars headed to the dragstrip.  Each car was allowed one timed run, and then the bracket eliminations began.

SHOGun (25k)Lamborghini (32k)

The SC1's main competition in this year's One Lap is a Ford Festiva SHOGun, which is rear wheel drive with a V6 Taurus SHO motor in the rear (see more on this car HERE) - and one of only 7 in existence.  The Festiva's best time on the dragstrip was 13.651.  It was lined up against a yellow Lamborghini Diablo on that run - and the Festiva beat it.  How often will you be able to see that?

Results from the dragstrip events at IRP can be seen on the One Lap website: Drag, Bracket.

A good portion of the cars that enter One Lap don't survive the week's events.  We saw plenty of problems and damage during this one day of racing.  A RENNTech Mercedes blew a head gasket, a Volkswagen Golf GTI smacked a concrete wall, a supercharged Pontiac Grand Prix quit early spewing smoke from the engine compartment, and a Turbo Miata and a Ford Ranger also came off the track with severe engine troubles.  And unfortunately, the majority of the cars in the race can't just run to the local AutoZone to pick up parts.

As the bracket racing finished up in the afternoon, we packed up and headed for home.  It was great to see Saturn's cars pushed to the extreme, talk to the team members, and enjoy the One Lap experience.  The variety of cars was amazing, and it's not often that people can see them all driven like this in one place.

One Lap Final Results as of 5/11/2002

The SC1 coupe finished in first place in the economy class, and 28th overall.  The L200 sedan finished in fourth place in the mid-priced sedan class and 22nd overall.  With a field of 83 cars, both cars did very well overall.  Congratulations guys!  See you next year.
