The 2006 SPC Rally

That's me, Tapp, Deebs, and Geoff enjoying some time among the cars.

Saturn tech and racer Ralph was on the job today, and was able to give us the play-by-play on what went wrong with the blue #96 SL2.

Before realizing that it was the battery that was causing the problem, the team actually suspected the fuel pump and replaced it at the track.  What's amazing is that they got their hands on a pump, dropped the tank, and replaced the pump while the car was on jackstands in the track's gravel parking lot - all within an hour so that they were able to race in the next heat.  Wow.

In addition to providing food and beverages during the show, the retailer and Ralph went out of their way to lend a hand to several club members in need of some service.

Larry D had a diagnostic done to help determine why his engine was running rough, and Kevin K had his PCM reflashed to correct an illuminated warning light created by a parts 'mismatch'.

Once the show judges had an opportunity to take a good look at all the vehicles, it was time to present the awards.  The awards were not only for today's show, but also covered the entire week's events
.

The awards were presented as follows:
  • Dragstrip bracket winner: Tapp, Palatine IL, '96 SC2

  • Dragstrip bracket runner up: Denise B, Torrington CT, '02 SC2

  • Fastest Saturn at the dragstrip: Lane, Central WI, '92 SC

  • Greatest distance traveled to attend: Mike N, Milwaukee WI, '92 SL2
Drove from Oregon to be with the group.
(Award also known as the memorial Jeff P distance award.  It is named after Jeff but can never be won by him regardless of the distance he drives to the event.)

  • Best appearance: Geoff C, Naperville IL, '95 SC2
(Award also known as The Lane award, presented for attention to detail and outstanding cleanliness and preparation.)
I am honored to have an award named after me, but that also means I can never again win it.  I was hogged!

  • Busted Knuckle award: tecnician Ralph of Saturn of Joliet, Blue #96 SL1/2 of mixed years
Ralph dropped the gas tank and swapped fuel pumps in less than an hour on jackstands, laying in gravel, then attempted to diagnose a wiring short while on track and at speed.
(The Busted Knuckle award is presented to the person that most successfully deals with roadside/trackside repairs.)

  • Club Appreciation award: sales manager Mike L of Saturn of Joliet
Mike and the crew at Saturn of Joliet deserve our special thanks for hosting the show and keeping us fed.

After the awards were presented late in the afternoon, everyone said their goodbyes and began the drive home.  What a perfect way to end the week, and the Saturn Performance Club's ninth annual Rally.  It was great getting to see everyone once again, as well as being able to meet the new members who had only previously been known by their e-mail addresses.  Let the countdown start for next year's rally...

Let's take a look at some of the people who joined us for the week's activities -
