1Lap at Gingerman Raceway - 5/13/2000

Rubber (43k)

Some rubber left behind (more than 200 feet of it) by the driver of the Dodge Viper who found out that he had finished in first place overall.  Cheering and applause from the crowd followed.

Jaguar (23k)Mallett (27k)

A Jaguar after an off-track excursion, and the supercharged Mallett Corvette that finished in 3rd place overall.

Several friends of the SPC were participating in this year's One Lap of America - guys we've driven with on Gingerman Raceway before.  They had many interesting stories to tell about this week of racing that was coming to a close.

A few of these people are shown below.

BMW (25k)

Club member Jamin parked his red SC2 for a while in order to co-drive a BMW 2002 in the Vintage Foreign class.  During Jamin's killer run at Sebring, he had a bit of a mishap with a tire wall (shown on the left rear quarter).  Jamin's team finished 7th in their class and in 100th place overall.

Be sure to watch Jamin's website for some interesting behind-the-scenes stories from the event in the near future.  And while you're there, be sure to drop him an e-mail to show your support and urge him to drive his Saturn next year!

This Toyota Supra Twin-Turbo was driven by
Emmanuel Crouvisier to 4th place overall (out of 116 cars)!  One great sounding car as it passed us on the long straight, Emmanuel says, "ahh, it's only 500 horsepower."  Emmanuel's dad also competed with a Mitsubishi Eclipse and they've driven with us on Gingerman more than once in the past.

Alan & Dale (25k)Stickered! (23k)

Alan and Dale have also driven at Gingerman with our club before.  In 1999, they finished first place in the economy class of One Lap (results HERE) - you may have read about their famed 'nitrous Neon' with the McLaren-built engine in last year's One Lap coverage in several automotive magazines.

This year Alan and Dale returned with a stronger and more powerful car with the addition of a turbo.   Bad luck struck though as they suffered an engine failure during one of the events.  Amazingly, they were able replace the bottom end of their engine and rejoin the competition.  Now that's determination.  If it weren't for the several events that they missed along the way, you can bet that the Saturn team would have had a serious challenge and that the Neon guys would have finished a bit higher than 4th place in the Economy Class and 56th place overall.

As their Neon was in the same class as the Saturn coupe, both teams enjoyed a bit of friendly rivalry.  Alan & Dale put a 'Tupperware' sticker on the Saturn (praising it's polymer side panels, no doubt), and the Saturn supporters countered with an 'SPC Racing' sticker on their Neon.   By the end of the day, we must have won them over as they were both wearing Saturn shirts (as shown in the picture above).

Greg Hagopian, who had also joined us for a previous lapping session, was out in his Ford Probe.  Greg and his co-driver George Gebara feverishly worked during One Lap's opening event to install a healthy 75 hp shot of Nitrous Oxide on the Probe's V6.  How's that for a last-minute adjustment?  The probe finished in 8th place in the SSGT2 class, and 26th overall.  Great job guys!
