The '99 SPC Rally

On the Dyno

Performance Technical Center in Elk Grove IL provided the facilities to dyno our cars and see some actual HP and torque numbers.  Since many of us had engine modifications, it gave us a chance to see if all the parts lived up to their manufacturers' claims.

Most of our cars were very close for actual HP & torque numbers with the automatics running slightly lower on average (to be expected).  One interesting item we found out: the Dynojet doesn't like Nology wires.

We did let a few F-body guys (Jason Snowden (OH), Paul Park (IL), and Dave Nelson (IL)) join us for the dyno runs.  Wasn't that nice of us?

Since Jamin's (NY) car was in stock form for autocross purposes, he had the opportunity to compare multiple runs using the stock air box & filter, stock air box w/K&N drop-in, and HS Powerstack & K&N.  There was no power difference between the stock filter element and the drop-in K&N.  The Powerstack did produce quite a bump in HP (about 7).

The chart on the left shows my actual HP & torque numbers on two runs.  With 77k on the odometer, I was happy to see that the engine was holding up well and that all the performance parts were doing their job.  Look at that torque at 2700!

"Why is your dyno horsepower less than what the car is rated at stock?"

Raw Saturn power.  Goose and his Canadian-spec SL2 were too much for the dyno to handle.

Overload (19k)
We knew that this was going to happen.

Be sure to check the Saturn Performance Club site soon for dyno results for all the cars that participated.

Go-Kart Racing

On the way home from the dyno shop, we stopped at a local go-kart track to take care of the leftover adrenalin from Wednesday's time on Gingerman raceway.  We could now finally pass in the turns and bump other cars!  Sorry, it was dark outside and I was busy thrashing one of the karts so I wasn't able to take any pictures.

We were all able to run on the track at the same time, and the karts handled well once the tires warmed up.  It was a lot of fun.   Rich T (CT) even put his car into a nasty spin on the track and was asked to leave.   Of course, all of the action was captured on video and will become a part of SPC history which we will fondly pass on to our grandchildren.
