The '99 SPC Rally

The Drag Strip

The group drove up to Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove WI for some serious burnouts and clutch abuse.  It was test & tune night so most of us got in a lot of practice runs and didn't race against other cars that were at the strip.  For many of us, it was the first time out and we were working at improving reaction times and just getting good launches off the line.

Flyin' down the quarter mile on one of my early passes.

The track ran a Saturn-only bracket just for our group during the course of the evening.

Here are Jamin (NY) and Jeff (CT) getting ready to go.

David (MI) and Deebs (IL) were the bracket winners for the evening.  Great driving, guys.

Deebs (and Centerforce clutches) get the evening's award for durability - dropping the clutch while the RPMs bounce off the 4k rev limiter makes for a hell of a launch.  You're much braver than I am, dude.

Timeslip (9k)

Here's a timeslip from one of my runs.  My reaction time and ET weren't very impressive (mileage, audio system weight, inexperience, various other excuses, etc...), but it was my first time out and was one hell of a great time!  A couple of weeks later I noticed that the evening did take a bit of life away from one of my motor mounts though - you can see a pic here.

Christena (OH) let me drive her ram-air SL2 automatic for one pass (my clutch was taking a rest at the time), where I got my best reaction time of the evening of .506 - and it wasn't even my car.  With the traction control off the car was impressive, laying down serious rubber in first gear with super-hard redline shifts.  I enjoyed it a lot - thanks again Christena!

I also had the opportunity to ride as a passenger with Jason (Christena's husband) in his Trans Am for one pass.  It was at least two seconds faster in the quarter than most of us (should be better for double the cylinders :P ), and was quite a ride.
