Gingerman 4/8/2000

Much to our surprise, cars started pouring in. The Saturns were joined on the track by a few Porsche 911s, Porsche Boxter, Honda Civic CRX, Honda Del Sol, Ford Probe, several Mazda RX7 turbos, a few Acura Integra Type Rs, Mazda Miata, Chev Corvette, Toyota MR2, Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback AWD, and the now infamous Ford Focus with 4 mysterious & daring helmeted occupants (more on that later...).
|
Two One Lap of America veterans were also out to get a feel for the track, since Gingerman is host to the beginning and ending events of One Lap this year. You can read more about the amazing One Lap of America HERE.

More than 25 people showed up despite the horrible conditions. We found an unlocked vacant garage on the property to try to get out of the cold. We decided to wait around a bit to see if the temp warmed up and track thawed out, and held a drivers' meeting to review the rules for the day. A few people (Porsche owners who had driven to the track on race tires - how, I can't imagine) did decide to turn around and head for home, but the majority stuck around for the day.

We set up to do tech inspections in the tower's garage bay in an attempt to stay out of the cold wind. As time went by and cars went thru, it began to warm up.

Hanging around,
we got a chance to admire Wally's plate (Wally is the club's Grand Poobah and patron saint
of low-compression forced induction). We also thought Jamin's spare was a nice touch
- a full-sized race tire. By the afternoon, the sun had come out and dried the track and the temperature had soared to the high 40s.

A beautiful
Porsche with owner & an instructor preparing for a session, and a new Honda s2000
fighting the urge to drive with the top down.
