The group relaxing in the staging lanes.
On Wednesday (August 7), the group left South Haven MI for Milan Dragway, in Milan MI. It was a beautiful day, with a few clouds and the temperature in the lower 70s. We had arranged to have the dragstrip exclusively for half the day and we all were able to get an insane amount of runs with no waiting. Alex P (MN) set the record for the day in his '97 SC2 with 34 runs in a three hour period. Holy crap.

The Saturn Motorsports guys unloaded their SL2 dragster from the transporter. Most of their day was spent tuning and tracking down some persistent engine problems which prevented them from running the impressive times we all knew the car was capable of. (The car has run in the 11s on prior occasions.)

Above, Deebs (IL)
checks in with Tapp (IL) who later pilots the SPC project car down the quarter to a best
time of 14.78 - not bad for a car that did 123 hp on the dyno! Click HERE for video
of the start of the run against the Saturn
Motorsports SC2 (776k, requires Indeo 5 codec available HERE).
Be sure to turn up your sound. |
Jeff Sabatini (MI), who is a writer with AutoWeek magazine, came by to see what was going on. Jeff now owns a Miata, but he's driven with us on the track with a Saturn he owned a few years back. Hmm, could there be an article about a particular Saturn club's activities in the works? (hint, hint)

Kevin (MO) was running his SC1 today hoping to see how much of a difference a transmission swap (to a dual-cam manual) and a lightened flywheel make since he last ran the quarter. In this photo, we can tell that Kevin loves his traction and this was just about the right size for his driveway at home. |
