Karts |
On Thursday
evening (August 8) the group visited Kart2Kart in
Sterling Heights MI. Helmets and neck braces were required, since these 5.5
horsepower karts reach up to 35 mph on the indoor track. A computer keeps track of
lap times, and we received a printout of race results when each session was over. We met up with Chris Berube (MI) at the kart
facility. Chris works as a Total Vehicle Integration Engineer in the Advanced
Vehicle Development Center at General Motors. He's also a member of Saturn's One Lap
of America race team, and recently started racing an SC2 in SCCA's improved touring
class. (You can see more of Chris, his team-mates, and the One Lap race cars in my event archives.) |
This was a beautiful indoor track, with a smooth concrete surface. Since the karts had hydraulic rear brakes only, a light touch was required while braking in corners so the car wouldn't spin.

Boy these things were quick. Click the link below for some video of one of our races. Be sure to turn up your sound. .AVI (requires Indeo codec) - 898k Indeo 5 codec can be downloaded HERE.

Chris B brought the turbocharged One Lap SC1 to the kart track. We were all able to get a much closer look at it and actually touch it - something we weren't able to when we spectated while the One Lap race was going on. |

Alex P (MN) climbed over the roll cage into where the back seat used to be. We had a tough time coaxing him out of there. Alex, would you like some ice cream?

Chris even took a
few people for a spirited drive on area roads while the rest of us headed to a local bar
for a few beverages. As we stood in the parking lot, we could hear roar and sneeze
sounds in the distance. A few people surely got a ride they'll remember. For more information on this car, check out One Lap's website, my coverage of their 2002 event at Indianapolis Raceway Park, and Saturn's One Lap website. |
