The 2002 SPC Rally |
Tour
of 12-Mile |
|
On the morning of Friday (August 9), the group was treated to a tour of Saturn's 12-Mile engineering facility in Madison Heights MI. The building contains a small-scale full assembly line, and is able to put cars together from start to finish. Concept cars, show cars, prototypes, and special projects are what typically roll out of here. The earliest cars when Saturn first started were produced here (before there was a plant in Spring Hill TN), and most recently, the One Lap of America race cars also. Cameras were not allowed and what we saw was to be kept hush hush. There are some exciting vehicles in the works, that's for sure.

Car Show |
Saturn was holding an employee car show on the grounds that we also took part in. It was easy to tell these were true car guys, and that we were very near Detroit, the Motor City. There were some very beautiful street rods and muscle cars on display.

A tent was set up where we and signed in, and passes were handed out to those in attendance. Our cameras also had to be registered with the facility, and we received a sheet with guidelines for what could and couldn't be photographed on the grounds. A catered meal was provided for all show participants, and a deejay was playing '60s cruising music throughout the day. There were lots of door prizes handed out too.
