Blarney Castle, and a view of the grounds from
the top.
|
What remains of Blarney Castle in County Cork was built in the year 1446. In addition to the famous 'Blarney Stone', this castle has a dungeon and a 'murder hole'. Yikes.

The 'rock close' is one of the interesting features that the grounds have to offer, which contains many amazing and colorful tree & rock formations. At the right is a tree growing out of rock, covered by a lot of moss. On the site also lies two 'dolmens' - stacked rock formations on gravesites dating back to the druids approximately 5000 years ago. I've read that it still has not been determined how stones of such great size were able to be manipulated & stacked that long ago.

The Blarney stone
is a part of the structure at the top of the castle (red arrows point to it in the photos
above). The man in the photo helps you lie on your back on the blanket, grab the
metal rails behind you with your hands, and bend your head backward to kiss the stone.
According to legend, kissing the stone will give you the gift of eloquence. During your kiss, you can get your photo taken and receive a certificate. You will also get a killer view straight down toward the ground. After the visit to the castle, we stopped by Blarney Woolen Mills. It is a huge shopping center with a great deal of traditional and handmade items - pottery, crystal, fabrics, and wool.
