The headlight guts came out - the lamps, wiring, trim, and popup door motors, and motor controller weighed in at 7 lbs. |
The battery was removed and replaced with a race battery, which is 19 lbs lighter. Ever see a car battery able to be held in one hand? |
Factory alloy wheels were replaced with some Konig Helium lightweight wheels (a very fitting wheel name), with a total difference of 20 lbs. Since this is rotating mass as well as unsprung weight, it will benefit handling and acceleration too. |
The windshield, rear window, and triangular side windows were replaced with Lexan, with a weight savings of 35 lbs. As an added bonus, Lexan is more impact resistant than glass, and all the windows can now be removed from the car in under 5 minutes. Pic at left is shown before the edges of the windows were blacked out. |
The driver's seat was removed and replaced with a Corbeau race seat with adjustable tracks. After fit and seating height is verified to be OK, the passenger seat will be replaced as well. Total weight savings: 10 lbs. |
The 18 lb stock flywheel was replaced with a lightweight Fidanza, which weighs only 7 lbs. That's a savings of 11 lbs - and its rotating mass as well. The revs should be able to spin up and down a bit more quickly now. |
Removed the EGR valve (replaced with a block-off plate), EGR solenoid, canister purge solenoid, charcoal canister, and associated vacuum lines. Add another 5 lbs to the total. |
At this time, the exhaust was cut off right at the rear of the resonator. This is about half of it - replacement of the catalytic convertor and resonator with something that flows more freely will soon follow. Add 20 more lbs. |
The remainder of the exhaust system was removed - the catalytic converter and resonator - which weighed 17 lbs. The replacement exhaust system weighed 13 lbs, so the net difference was 4 lbs. |
The ignition cylinder and wiper controls were replaced with switches on a custom switch panel. Weight savings: 3 lbs. |
