Broken Stuff

Driving a car hard on the track shows you where its weak points are.  Most cars will do events like this and never have a problem, but some occasionally will.

Adam's Firebird had a coolant problem and a dash whose idiot lights reminded him of a Christmas tree.

I had heard an odd noise during many of my sessions that I thought may be from unevenly worn tire tread.  As it became louder it was easy to tell that it was a wheel bearing on its way out.  Little did I know how far gone it actually was, and it ended up wrecking the hub as well.

Click HERE for a few seconds of video that show the shot bearing (300kb).  Video requires DIVX 5 codec to play - info/download HERE.

Gary H had problems with his Porche that could be attributed to either the clutch or transmission.  The car was down for the count and would need to be transported back to Kentucky.  Doug N and a few buddies provided a trailer and a great deal of help to get the vehicle where it needed to go.

This breakage along with Gary's distance from home was enough to win him the least-coveted Rally award - Most Spectacular Failure.  Congratulations Gary!  The trophy consisted of a broken gear hot-glued to a plaque.

Another event participant had an unfortunate run-in with a guardrail, hitting it hard.  Very hard.  It did take some time for the track crew to get all the pieces and parts cleaned up.

As the day came to an end and the sun was setting, everyone finished their mechanical work and packed up.  It was an outstanding day on the track overall.  And boy, were we hungry.

Where else is there to go when you're damn hungry and looking for a huge meal?  You know it - Golden Corral.  We took the time to talk about the happenings of the day and ate until we hurt.

After dinner, it was back to the hotel for a quiet evening.
